The genesis

Nested in the heart of the Rimbach valley, the basilica Notre-Dame de Thierenbach finds its origins in the 8th century. Benedictine monks settled in the near Murbach valley had created an oratory there, that has become the passing centuries a Marian pilgrimage. The history says that in 1125, a young soultzean noble suffering from an incurable disease, had made the vow that if he would recover , he’d give all his possessions to the Virgin. Transported in Thierenbach where his vow was fulfilled, he donated everything he had in order to build a monatery and started a pilgrimage to the Cluny Abbey where he became monk. The monastery grounded on the site of the ancient priory, shelted 10 or a dozen monks dedicating their life to agricultural work, study and prayer. Nowadays, Notre-Dame de Thierenbach attracts more than 300000 visitors per year and therefore constitutes the Upper Alsace’s largest Marian pilgrimage.
